Press Release

Viewings at Sotheby’s and Allan Stone Projects: November 27 – December 10, 2018

Online Bidding Open: December 3 - 10

View the Sale

Allan Stone Projects is very pleased to announce its collaboration with Sotheby’s in offering more than 70 works from the Allan Stone Collection for sale in an online-only auction, December 3-10. As part of this innovative collaboration, Sotheby’s will be exhibiting a selection of highlights beginning November 27, while the larger preview will be on display at Allan Stone Projects, and will remain on view through the end of the auction on December 10.

This auction showcases the breadth of the legendary gallerist Allan Stone’s renown for recognizing talent and artistic kinship. Allan Stone, who founded his eponymous gallery in 1960, was one of the earliest supporters of Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Joseph Cornell and John Chamberlain, who went on to become giants of their generation. He was the New York dealer for Wayne Thiebaud for more than forty years and was the first gallerist to exhibit work by Jack Whitten. Allan Stone also supported numerous less well-known artists of unique talent and ingenuity such as Dorothy Grebenak, Steve Durkee and John O’Reilly. The sale will bring together a wide-ranging group of works from this dynamic and celebrated Collection.

Artists in the auction include James P. Aponovich, Arman, Robert Baribeau, Bo Bartlett, Barton Benes, William Beckman, César, John Chamberlain, Dennis Clive, Barry Cohen, Gordon Cook, Joseph Cornell, Willem de Kooning, Peter Dean, George Deem, Thomas Downing, Steve Durkee, Richard Estes, Peter Gee, John Gibson, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Dorothy Grebenak, Derrick Guild, James Havard, Kazuko Inoue, Franz Kline, Gaston Lachaise, Bernard Langlais, Alfred Leslie, Don Nice, Wayne Nowack, John O'Reilly, Philadelphia Wire Man, Edith Schloss, Lorraine Shemesh, Domenick Turturro, John Vickery, and Jack Whitten.
